The Growing Cost Of Homelessness
San Francisco residents and hotel owners have initiated legal action against the city, alleging the Tenderloin district has been permitted to become a containment zone for rampant illegal drug use and other illicit activities. This development coincides with analyses, such as that by author David W. Marshall, which link the modern homelessness crisis to policy shifts under the Reagan administration, including significant reductions in affordable housing funding and social safety-net programs.

Our endorsement for the 37th Legislative District Position 1 is Kelabe Tewolde! Tewolde has a life's experience and working-class politics that are as rooted in the 37th as they come. Looking to challenge incumbent Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, Tewolde offers a boldly progressive and grassroots alternative for the district. Tewolde is another younger, progressive challenger looking to replace a 28-year incumbent and shake up the status quo in Olympia. Raised in Seattle by an Eritrean refugee single mother, Te

Nolan’s Odyssey is a modern trek of ancient majesty
Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight) achieves something monumental and magnificent with his robust, stridently adrenalized adaptation of Homer’s eighth-century BCE epic poem The Odyssey. In this modern interpretation that still pays exhilarating homage to old-school sword-and-sandal classics like Jason and the Argonauts and Ben-Hur, the writer-director uses a mixture of gritty realism and unabashed melodramatic excess to bring his saga to life. The film’s three-hour running time vanishes in the

Betting on Wildfires, Denny Blaine Verdict Is In, and Exchanging Books in Ballard
On today’s episode, host Jane C. Hu talks with science journalist Kylie Mohr about the prediction markets allowing people to bet on natural disasters, including wildfires. As this hot, dry summer continues, Kylie explains the risks involved in betting on fires that can be human-made as well as who is profiting from these bets. Then Jane is joined by contributors Guy Oron and Marcus Harrison Green to break down the verdict that arrived this week in the Denny Blaine park trial. Guy explains what the judge’s ruling means for park-goers and neighbors, and Marcus asks why this particular park got so much attention. Finally, all three get into weekend plans ranging from World Cup finals to book exchanges. And if you’re a City Cast Neighbor, stick around for a bonus segment about a legal battle between megacorporation Nestle and a local Seattle cold brew company. On July 15, King County Superior Court Judge Samuel Chung ruled against neighborhood group Denny Blaine Park for All’s request to ban nudity or fully close down a historically LGBTQIA+ park and beach along Lake Washington. Although Denny Blaine Park will remain open, the judge did grant the group’s request to further abate what its members see as “public nuisance” activities. In July 2025, Denny Blaine Park for All’s request for an abatement planwas granted, after homeowners adjacent to the park (including

Dare to speak a word on the bus — it’s good for the culture! A critic of nativism and The Stranger’s “How to Seattle”
Spend any time in the Emerald City and you’ll be sure to find those eager to espouse a doctrine of what is or isn’t proper Seattleite behavior. As our once secluded, hilly town on an isthmus has become more and more metropolitan, people’s attempts to assimilate (or even ward off) transplants with a laundry list of norms and etiquette — or even stranger purity tests — have gone too far. Culture is not static. What starts off as a novel trend can end up becoming a deep-seated tradition later, but people every

What Do We Do About Aurora? It’s Complicated
Today on the podcast, we dig into the issues surrounding Aurora Avenue. Aurora has a long and complicated history, and more recently, local residents’ relationship to one northern section of the road has only gotten more so: the section of the road between 85th and 105th streets experiences frequent gunfire, which some believe is rooted in sex trafficking. Earlier this summer, neighbors, dissatisfied with the city's response, took matters into their own hands and placed makeshift barriers blocking through traffic on their streets. We wanted to hear from some of those neighbors directly, so host Jane C. Hu and producer Sam J. Leeds talk with a community advocate who led a walk of Aurora for local community members and lawmakers, a sex worker impacted by the city’s policing efforts, and a resident reimagining the future of Aurora. Film historian and actress Illeana Douglas reveals the stories behind an all-female Hollywood classic
Among all the Hollywood biographies and histories I’ve read, this book truly stands out. I was genuinely impressed by the depth of research and the behind-the-scenes revelations I had never encountered. It’s a compelling and exciting read. Even the famous Bette Davis–Joan Crawford feud pales in comparison to the Norma Shearer–Joan Crawford rivalry that explodes off the pages. That rivalry is just one of the treasures buried inside Jungle Red! The Making of MGM’s The Women, the new book by actress, writer,
