SGN Endorsements Kelabe Tewolde (Washington State Legislative District 37 Position 1)

Our endorsement for the 37th Legislative District Position 1 is Kelabe Tewolde! Tewolde has a life's experience and working-class politics that are as rooted in the 37th as they come. Looking to challenge incumbent Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, Tewolde offers a boldly progressive and grassroots alternative for the district. Tewolde is another younger, progressive challenger looking to replace a 28-year incumbent and shake up the status quo in Olympia. Raised in Seattle by an Eritrean refugee single mother, Te

Nolan’s Odyssey is a modern trek of ancient majesty

Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight) achieves something monumental and magnificent with his robust, stridently adrenalized adaptation of Homer’s eighth-century BCE epic poem The Odyssey. In this modern interpretation that still pays exhilarating homage to old-school sword-and-sandal classics like Jason and the Argonauts and Ben-Hur, the writer-director uses a mixture of gritty realism and unabashed melodramatic excess to bring his saga to life. The film’s three-hour running time vanishes in the

Judge allows Denny Blaine Park to remain open but orders city to further abate “public nuisance” activities

On July 15, King County Superior Court Judge Samuel Chung ruled against neighborhood group Denny Blaine Park for All’s request to ban nudity or fully close down a historically LGBTQIA+ park and beach along Lake Washington. Although Denny Blaine Park will remain open, the judge did grant the group’s request to further abate what its members see as “public nuisance” activities. In July 2025, Denny Blaine Park for All’s request for an abatement planwas granted, after homeowners adjacent to the park (including

Dare to speak a word on the bus — it’s good for the culture! A critic of nativism and The Stranger’s “How to Seattle”

Spend any time in the Emerald City and you’ll be sure to find those eager to espouse a doctrine of what is or isn’t proper Seattleite behavior. As our once secluded, hilly town on an isthmus has become more and more metropolitan, people’s attempts to assimilate (or even ward off) transplants with a laundry list of norms and etiquette — or even stranger purity tests — have gone too far. Culture is not static. What starts off as a novel trend can end up becoming a deep-seated tradition later, but people every

Film historian and actress Illeana Douglas reveals the stories behind an all-female Hollywood classic

Among all the Hollywood biographies and histories I’ve read, this book truly stands out. I was genuinely impressed by the depth of research and the behind-the-scenes revelations I had never encountered. It’s a compelling and exciting read. Even the famous Bette Davis–Joan Crawford feud pales in comparison to the Norma Shearer–Joan Crawford rivalry that explodes off the pages. That rivalry is just one of the treasures buried inside Jungle Red! The Making of MGM’s The Women, the new book by actress, writer,

Obituary: Michael Alan Ramey, 1938–2026

Michael Alan Ramey, born August 2, 1938, in Washington. DC, died peacefully, as he wished, on June 12, 2026, in Seattle, after voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED), supported by loving friends and the wonderful people at A Sacred Passing. Mike lived by the philosophy of “tikkun olam,” a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world” through social justice and ethical behavior. Mike’s advocacy for social justice extended in many directions. He took a studied approach and worked to find merit in vi

Obituary: Lois Thetford, 1945–2026

Lois Thetford, 80, died on May 24, 2026, in Seattle, soon after a cancer diagnosis. Lois had been a vital member of the Seattle Lesbian and Queer community for over 50 years, and her unexpected loss came as a painful shock to many. Born in Christiansted, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, on November 25, 1945, Lois became an anti–Vietnam War activist while a student at Cornell University. One of her first political activities upon arriving in the Seattle area in 1971 was organizing with soldiers who opposed the
