Who's my dad? When genetic testing gets complicated.

It’s estimated that millions of Americans have learned through home genetic tests that they’re not actually biologically related to a parent.  Most aren’t prepared for this surprise. And many aren’t briefed with informed consent before getting the news.  Betty Cohn has a Ph.D. in Public Health Genetics from the University of Washington. For her dissertation, she spoke with people who had this experience. To learn more before doing genetic testing, check out this Genetic Testing Consent Informational Flyer We can only make Seattle Now because listeners support us. Tap here to make a gift and keep Seattle Now in your feed.  Got questions about local news or story ideas to share? Senator Lindsey Graham: 1955–2026

The long-serving Republican, South Carolina's senior U.S. Senator, passed away on July 11th, 2026, due to an aortic dissection. He was known for his controversial stance on issues and close ties with Donald Trump, which came after he bluntly disavowed Trump before the 2016 presidential election. His death could seriously impact floor and committee dynamics in the United States Senate, leading to potential challenges for Republicans as they try to move their agenda before the midterms. Weekend Listen: Microsoft is doing a hard reset of its XBOX gaming division, survivors say Tule Lake still has lessons for America eighty years later, and how a Northwest tribe and an endangered sea creature are helping each other

Today, we’re bringing you the best from the KUOW Newsroom. First, when it comes to Xbox, Microsoft is doing a hard reset. This week, the company began reducing its gaming division by 3,200 jobs. Microsoft calls it the most significant restructuring in Xbox history. Next, instead of watching fireworks to commemorate America's 250th birthday last weekend, about 400 people went on a pilgrimage to the site of a former camp where Japanese-Americans were imprisoned during World War II. And finally, one of the most endangered sea creatures of the Pacific Ocean is getting a leg up in the kelp forests of the San Juan Islands. It’s a twenty-four-armed sea star called the sunflower star. We can only make Seattle Now because listeners support us.
